What is DVMTA?

The Desert Valley Music Teachers Association

In 1980 under the direction of Betty Schmuck, the Tempe Music Teachers Association was founded to meet the needs of music teachers in the Tempe area and surrounding community.  As the organization grew to serve musicians in several communities, the name was changed to Desert Valley Music Teacher's Association (DVMTA).  Membership has continued to increase over the years, and the community has evolved into a dynamic, professional organization with the following purposes:

  • To represent the highest standards of music teaching and performance within its members
  • To provide continuous ongoing profession growth and training opportunities for all members
  • to foster cultural activities for students, parents and the community
  • to encourage excellence in student preparation and performance through honors or awards
To accomplish these purposes, DVMTA members participate in monthly meetings for continuing professional growth.  Meeting topics have included workshops in technology, teaching ideas and materials, expanding repertoire, performance and studio organization.  These meetings are taught by members of DVMTA or other professionals.

DVMTA offers five annual events with hundreds of students participating in each event. The events include:
  • Music Marathon - A marathon recital held in various locations around the valley
  • Original Composition Festival - A composition contest for students of all levels
  • Cavalcade of Rhythm - A duet ensemble by students of all levels featuring 22 pianos on stage
  • Awards in Excellence - DVMTA's anual piano competition
  • Achievement Day - An opportunity to recognize student achievement in musical study
In addition, DVMTA offers several scholarship opportunities for High School Seniors, Devoted Performers, and Outstanding Music Students.  Students are eligible for scholarships based upon the length of study, participation in DVMTA events as well as other performance criteria.
